I would guess there are firms and HNW who may consider something like this, it would all depend on the overall deal though. 

If you have a five hour flight, it makes it much harder to get to the market to tour properties.I would look at job growth as well.

I am originally from UK and after 6 years I now qualify for funding and I am wanting to house hack a multi family (seems like a cheat code as it isn't an option on a residential mortgage in the UK) but the issue i am finding is the low inventory in my area (6 listings within 20 mile radius of Danville VA) and nothing that i think i can make cashflow well / or seems like it would rent to a decent caliber of tenant. 

Things like 8% cap rates, and 10-15% cash on cash returns. 

I have quite a few that I'll list below however it will depend on what you mean by relatively low acquistion cost.For short term, you'll want to be in trendy areas like Broadripple, Holy Cross, Fountain Square, Bates Hendricks, Old Southside, Garfield Park.

However, the more complicated something is, the more likely it will go wrong.

I am not sure what the Denver market is like but there are not too many HOA neighborhoods in this area unless you go east in areas like Brandon, Ruskin, Valrico (which are good areas to flip in) or North of Tampa in areas like Land O Lakes, Wesley Chapel & New Tampa.
