This happened with storage units a long time ago - for awhile Wall St started buying all of the properly zoned land and drove down the yield to where their investors were happy but that fewer and fewer local small investors could compete.In the end this is the price of the free market.

Imagine if McDonalds suddenly had millions of pairs of shoes -- just because they are a great business doesn't mean they would know what to do with millions of pairs of shoes; since they know nothing about shoes and would likely sell them at a discount just to get rid of them, so that they could get back to the business they are good at -- selling food.Banks are in the same position -- they have all these houses and aren't in the business of owning or selling houses -- they just want to get rid of them.
