Investing alongside a PF will be a very, very involved setup.

While many bring thier level of ethical expectations along side thier religion, they are not necessarily the same at all.

The rafter tails don't carry much load and serve mainly to support the soffits, facia, and gutters so you should be able to get away with just nailing new 2x4's alongside the existing trusses and rebuilding the affected area.

Or invest alongside an investor here in the Bay.

Then a new rafter is sistered alongside the cracked rafter and the two are attached to each other using lag bolts. 

We had to make sure that when we had guests over they did not park along side the house as no onecould get out.

I am in a similar situation as you (25 and just getting started in RE).I work alongside a lot of investors and many of them stress that getting your license is very beneficial.

I have been able to profit over 60k on these deals (I couldn't have done it w/o bigger pocket).Now that I've been able to accumulate a little wealth alongside my full time job where I make pretty good money.

I will definitely look into the courses and books alongside my pursuit.
