I just mailed him the key Monday, and within 3 hours of informing him, he tells that he has declared bankruptcy but would still like to rent the place and intends to pay.

If the tenants want to give the former tenant a portion of the deposit back, we recommend the new tenant pays the old tenant directly; alternatively, if the new tenant pays us some portion of the deposit, and there wasn't any damages to the house, and the existing tenants agree, we send that same money to the old tenant.
