For us the basement pour is was one of the largest single expenses so we approached an small independent (basement) contractor & he came in around 50% below our GC's quote & that of a couple of other larger companies.We also personally negotiated & purchased the windows, doors, kitchen cabinets, trim, flooring, mechanicals etc etc.

MegReach out to many brokers and agents try to let them know you are interested in their listings.The REIA clubs are a great way to connect remember the players there have relations with brokers.A buddy wanted to do REO's found the largest REO broker in her state met a guy who bought one house a year from the broker for 27 years.
