Also, please note that the OP is planning to start a rental activity in retirement, so his future income is not likely to be taxed in a lower tax bracket in the future when he withdraws his funds from the IRA.I realize that I am just a tax nerd and not a CPA, so maybe someone with more formal tax training can explain why converting passive income to active income (that is subject to self-employment income taxes) makes sense in the context of the OP's original question.

Do I need to establish a formal/legal entity or can I just write two checks, one from personal account and one from my LLC account, and then make sure that both myself and the LLC appear on the deed?
