If there are lots of trades in the area or surrounding area of your STR, you can certainly manage it on your own. 

Prefer to have a general contractor who already has good networking with subcontractors and trades and has good construction management skills.

(Thus we have NYC skyscrapers trading at 2% cap rates) and all the cranes in the world building Dubai up to be the world financial capital of the 21st century.
