Often times there is a significant amount of vacation rental infrastructure in place (cleaners, handymen etc.) but you can still easily stand out and have a killer place.

I've just approached it as being very cognizant of when they usually pay and monitoring it.

Similarly, retail might be near the residential area (but on high traffic roads), and light / heavy industry is far from the residential - but close to freeways and rail infrastructure.

Same goes for appliances or other critical infrastructure.

You can get gas and water meters that will monitor how much is used by each tenant.

More modern amenities and infrastructure and upgrading of restaurants, homes and businesses to support the influx of travelers, second home buyers and relocation of families and retirees. 

The former had infrastructure (roadway) in place because something had been there years ago.
