I love that you have taken your time and are now ready to check out my family's company as a possible way to get started. 

Because they will get defensive if they feel you are pressuring them.

I would talk to several to get their opinion.  

You will get to keep your low mortgage interest rate on your current property, and will still be able to use the benefits of a primary residence (lower down payment, lower mortgage interest rate) on your next purchase, as long as you have stayed in your current home for 1 year or longer (and there some exceptions to this as well). 

I am just getting started in real estate investing and have not bought my first property yet.

and so any interpretation that would require to get you a license to act on behalf of the owning company does not make sense to me. 

With switching to an entirely different field, it would probably be a good idea to get a little bit of experience in the day to day operations of property management, as well as familiarizing yourself with some of the Colorado fair housing laws, minimum property requirements, etc.
