@Mitchell HareCan't speak to how things are done in your area, but I know of an individual who has done work on a home that is in the historic district out here and he said that all plans and designs had to be approved by the historical registry/society.

I believe Gatewood does not fall under any of the OKC historic preservation districts, so you should have much more leeway on what you can and cannot do from an HP perspective (https://www.okc.gov/departments/planning/design-review-and-historic-preservation/historic-preservation)It's an Urban Conservation District, though: http://www.gatewoodokc.com/about-us

The historic district proper is pretty safe (there is a neighborhood supported security patrol) but there will be issues with the preservation committee.
