If I sought you out for legal advice, I would hope that one of the first questions you'd ask me is what my risk tolerance is before you told me that you disagree.

Now I find landlording very enjoyable, and something that I can continue for a very long time.For the landlords that don't like it much, but perhaps want to make it more tolerable here are the things that I did to change my perspective on landlording.1.

I will take good care of you, but I need tolerant and flexible residents.  

Sadly, I only have the tolerance level for a one month delay and then I will begin eviction proceedings. 

That being said, I do think that Real Estate is a fascinating field, so I enjoy many aspects of it, and it's not entirely a means that must be tolerated to reach an end.

Different goals, motivations and risk-tolerances mean that there is space for a lot of different schools of thought.

Of course everybody is different with differing priorities and risk tolerances

If the tenant is present, discuss the issue with he/she and let them know that any violation of the lease - including disabling a smoke detector or any other property will not be tolerated and will result in eviction.

Moreover, just the act of thinking of it as an experiment will help to drive clarity on goals, risks (to your point), tolerance for those risks... which may lead to a better experiment design or a decision not to do anything!
