If it's in bad shape and is fraying or falling apart then deal with the problematic areas, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's a deal breaker.If you're going to demo or remodel, you're going to have a couple extra steps in the process (wetting, bagging, sealing) and it will be more expensive, and may require a hazmat demo permit (depending on what your county or state requires) - also has to be dropped in a different section of the landfill, or in a specific hazmat landfill.

Purchase a hand auger from a local hardware store, snake out every year and then vacuum out the trap completely with a wet vac after running clean water through it for a period of time prior to vacuuming.
