I would not put my head in the sand and choose not to know.Someone has questioned it and if you do  nothing and they develop health concerns that opens you up to a huge law suit.

I think the hardest thing is going to be not relying on the paycheck to cover daily expenses and figuring out health insurance.

Your company is paying for 1/2 of your health insurance for both of you. 

@Mike Duncan if you are worried they are pretending to be a health professional or have a fake contract you can also see if they have a professional license on the state database of origin.

I live in California so I am not able to monitor the health of the tree on a frequent basis.

However, the state's property code says landlords must fix any condition that threatens a tenant's physical health or safety.Just because it worked when they moved in, doesn't mean they broke it.
