I've poked at him for bursting bubbles but think of him as the necessary voice of reason - he counsels caution and considering the full aspects of a problem, which often extends well beyond what someone expected it might.

Consider that professionals don't seek to do business with a liar, even those who think they need to be sneaky.A business partner better be fully informed.Having to lie, besides the moral and business aspect, usually stems from the lack of knowledge and ability to set up a deal so that you never have to lie.Insecurity of newbies may make them think they need to have a story or a pitch.

I don't have a strong opinion on this either way, but if you do calculate your assignment fee as some percentage of profit, you'd better very clearly define "profit" ahead of time.
