While I want to hear from everyone on the forum, I do think there's a lot to be said for that neighbourly connection.

Some countries, Portugal, Greece, offer a pathway to citizenship through real estate, so thats an added benefit to some countries.

Sorry you had to go through all that, I fully agree.. they are the absolute worst & their 10% is utter BS when it comes to them taking control your hard earned units, they refunded 1900( attempted to )when guests complained cleanliness issues, upon asking turns out that they had neighbours trash litter in their compound  shown as evidence !

We are looking into buying a property in Greece (Kalabaka) to use as a short term rental, and wondered if anyone has any experience with this.

One person's virulent weed is another's gardening challenge.We had a neighbour who nursed along a bamboo hedge for years, fortunately this cold hardy strain of bamboo only grew about 4' in height and had to be covered each winter (along with the rhododendrons) ... apparently it was only cold hardy to about -15, so anything that crawled out of the patch during the summer was killed off by the -30 to -40 nights in the winter.

Her neighbour unfortunately passed away from a long battle with cancer today.

Good to have it, especially for direct bookings and situations where they could become injured (pool, golf cart, etc.) or affect a neighbouring property. 

As the neighbour helped the daughter, why not ask if they can help you and pay them for their time.While you still have their deposit, by the time you move everything and store it, and deal with it, that will take up most of the deposit, so you still need them to pay you rent.
