I used to be as black and white as the OP about this subject until I actually went to a few of the really large events.Sat and talked to attendee's that paid 30 to 40k to go.. many frankly were real estate brokers... and other professionals.I do think though pounding on folks who have no money and getting them to run up their credit cards to pay to go to the event is something I am no totally comfortable with.. but then I think of that little company called Hewlet Packard and think back on how they started with a 10k loan in a garage in Palo Alto right down the street from were I used to live.. were did they end up.So when I go to these events as an invited vendor..

The attendees could apply for the Mastery program (I was unaware this was Fortune Builders prior to attending) They offer "hand holding" in the Mastery program to ensure you will be successful.

Even though the featured guest speaker changes, the pitch is pretty much the same i.e get the attendee excited about real estate and easy/huge profits and provide them with just enough information so they will pay for the next level.

I realize you can't control those vendors - just be considerate of your attendees and their needs.The other thing is: drop the hard-sell, be entirely transparent.

I thought it was an impressive number and hadn't thought of it the way you are, but I am going to take a stab at explaining it, and hopefully it will make more sense:There are indeed hundreds of attendees at the R2R seminars, but not all of them become students.
