If it were mine, for a rental,I would caulk it, putty knife smooth, and put a border of red crushed  granite around the patio, with pavers in it.Draw the eye somewhere else, because if you paint it, you will have to repaint it.And in the desert sun, I always wonder how long paint will last.The pic below has tan rocks, which is another option.( would choose the crushed granite over the rocks on a rental because kids throw rocks, and they will get under the mower and cause Gardner complaints.)Good Luck!
