You do need to send in a check with the extension, the irs provides guidelines for calculating the amount.Real estate investing complicates taxes sufficiently that I have found I save way more than I spend by having a CPA who specializes in real estate investor tax returns.

I would invest in a market that will sustain STRs and is a tourism destination. 

This is true even if the market value for the As-Is is right on target.For example, let's say you are getting a deal for $100k that is worth $130k As-Is.

But, if the cost is fairly nominal, maybe under a couple grand, and you have no experience in real estate, including owning your own home and hiring contractors for that, then it is likely worth it.I would always start with a deep assessment of where you feel you don't have adequate knowledge.
