What is the proper way to deal with the security dep notice if no forwarding address?

When I am sending the notice to my rental and I know they are not there I send it certified, signature required, no not forward, and the post office returns it back to me for no one signing it and the webpage gives a day to day accounting of the letter's travels.

Do both of yourselves a favor and give it a long lead time, that way they can come to terms with the new rent and make adjustments to their budget, and if they are moving out, you both have time to get your ducks in a row (you to try to do a fast turnaround on the rental) and them to find an appropriate new home.
