You can speed up your part by doing everything you can as soon as you can, and by monitoring everyone else involved, in particular, your lender.A couple of months is typical, I'd say.

Officials launched a foreclosure-prevention program to help homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage, with loans of up to $7,500 per household.The city also recently passed an ordinance requiring owners of abandoned homes _ whether an individual or bank _ to register those properties with the city so police can better monitor them.Elsewhere around the country, advocates in Cleveland are working with the city to allow homeless people to legally move into and repair empty, dilapidated houses.

Monitor your score and if you've got credit cards/student loans/etc. pay things on time.A few months in advance speak with lenders about pre-approval.Also, if possible, whether through an investor who buys often or through a contractor or RE inspector, do some property walkthroughs and you'll quickly learn what to look out for repair-wise when viewing a property.
