I think the coming generation will implement and figure out cost saving ways to keep buildings in good shape with an ever decreasing construction pool of workers.Many in construction are attempting to introduce construction jobs to more young people but they fail to realize the product is the issue and not the marketing.We have to implement technology.

What kind of advice would you offer to a young individual still in college, that wants to enter the real estate game? 

There seems to be a big presence on the forum from the KC area so you should be able to get some good advice.It looks like you have your WHY figured out, -- an extremely important motivator.

Also these people do not sound motivated at all which is your #1 criteria if you are trying to wholesale.

While there will always be distressed houses, motivated sellers, foreclosures, HUD homes, and even discounted retail homes, you have to watch the trends and learn how to utilize the opportunities at hand.

There are also lot of editing software products that will allow you to add the text to the videos.
