We just added drain tile and a sump pump.

Carpet should last more than 1-2 years but I'd replace with some sort of pre-finished hardwood or even tile if possible. 

Think what your wife does when she goes into the hair dresser, she has at least a couple of pics of what she wants and at least 1 pic of what she doesn't want.I would recommend talking to a local building materials supplier.
