I mean, I was in dental school for 4 years before they turned me loose on the general public ;-)  My thinking is that getting experience showing homes, learning the sales process and all the associated components, learning how to identify value, etc would be extremely valuable in the face of stiff competition.

My agent says the only risk is that if the appraisal comes back with issues, we would have to fix them in order close the deal, which would mean the seller would have to allow us to make any identified repairs.
