If you are only going to be stationed there for 2-3 years, why not rent a place that is close to work and that you will enjoy living in (within your BAH), and then invest somewhere else where you can have positive cash flow.

While opportunity costs can be a separate discussion, if you have a bird in the hand that hits all your specs, then it'd be silly to pass on it because of a pseudo-rule that someone else created.
