I would recommend doing what Vincent said for sure, I would also highly recommend, once you have found a city you are interested in, try and connect with as many active members from that city and tell them what you can bring to the table or just say you want to talk about whatever it is you want to talk about.

To be clear: I'm not saying claiming abandonment and re-renting the unit is the best or only option here (I don't have all the details and only the original poster @April Mattin can make that call) - I'm simply saying abandonment is one legally recognized option that is on the table and landlords and PMs should be familiar with the state laws on the subject.
