If they ask why you're asking just say you're thinking about buying the property and just want to check the # of legal units because you were told there might be a second unit and just want to find out if that's true.In the worst case scenario, you wouldn't "lose the house" but if the city found out you have an illegal basement unit they could fine you and/or force you to "unfinish" the basement, which is heartbreaking 💔 😭I'm not an attorney so I can't give you legal advice, but if it were me, I'd try to in-person and as informally as possible inquire about the # of legal units, and then if you determine that the basement unit is indeed an illegal unit, I would "let sleeping dogs lie" and just have her stay through the duration of her tenancy and let her move out on her own whenever she chooses to.I would be the "best" landlord I could possibly be and bend over backwards to try to keep her happy, because I wouldn't want to ever have to be in court with her.
