Of course, always try and chat with YOUR attorney ahead of this decision, or even your CPA too, as there are tax consequences for each strategy.

And if so, can you confirm that mortgage lender paid directly to the HELOC, then you still had full access to the HELOC with no consequences?

My reputation is on the line and I won't install shingles that someone bought at a discount because they were sitting out behind a warehouse for 5 years.
