To "hedge" your equity position you need to reduce principal.Look at an amortization schedule at a loan amount over 30 years, the principal reduction is minimal in year 1 and barely increases in 5 or 7 years.

If you look at an amortization schedule, you can calculate how much in additional principal reduction it would take to knock off a year, depending on where you are in the life of the loan.
