You would have to hire contractors to inspect and go there on your behalf.

We agreed on a price and I had the inspector out and he said that plumbing, electric, structurally everything was in good working order.

Lots of confusion as to what a 'contract or deed' actually is.First of all, much of the specific rights associated with this type of real estate contract depend on state laws, which vary somewhat.Secondly, the seller of the contract, i.e. property seller/lien holder, hold LEGAL title to the property. 

Also check with the general contractor on what he would like to see but keep it to payments once the activity is completed.
