Most surface owners here make money through damage payments from the mineral owners, by leasing the property for cattle grazing, selling fresh water for oilfield operations (groundwater is tied to surface estate in TX), or building commercial facilities (man camp, RV parks, etc) depending on accessibility.

Flat roofs are horrible for leaks and holding water.

Roofs, HVAC, Water heaters, kitchen and bath remodels, tenant turnover (typically repairs and maintenance) cost me much more than $220 per month.  

It could be a city lien due to delinquent trash/water bills, or it could be a third on the house heading to foreclose on the house.
