This was by design of the founding fathers as well for security of the country not only from within but from without - knowing that a man/woman who would have the freedom to obtain a firearm in defense of self and property would result in an armed populace massively greater in size than any possible standing army in the world.

In all the thousands of discussions I have had with people from the far left to the far right, it really has always come down to what the government's role should be in the United States.Obviously National Defense, Interstate Commerce, international trade, internal defense of citizens, etc...
