Like @Bruce Woodruff mentioned above, get a plat map (not a typo, its a property line map) from the local assessor's office, planning office or county clerk and give it to the surveyor.

I have done two moderately successful local BRRRRs and it would have been impossible to do them the way I did it out-of-state.I also house-hack my own residence and I can't recommend it enough for a beginner if everyone you live with is on board.
