If a through body color porcelain is used, a chip of the surface exposes a color underneath that closely matches the surface - that's a good thing (not the chipping, but that it isn't a horrible outcome).

Wood filler/new boards for any bad spots pre sand (so you can level them when you sand) then 2 coats of poly (poly will color the floor) or stain it all first fir a particular look,( stain wood filler spots) then poly to lock it in.
