They were marking up a deal that someone else had under contract and not being transparent.  

Yes, in power outages, she would not work, but when they kick on, it pumps it all out in minutes, and I just have a dirt crawlspace with vapor barrier so some water is less risk for me....If you have one of uncertain age, actually I might have a back up ready (not just for power outs) because you have to call the plumber, who may or may not have the one you want and may mark it way up.

Personally, if I'm paying a contractor to do a job, I want his butt on the job, not out shopping (and rest assured that you're paying for that time one way or another).

Housing is so expensive now that people at that level are having a tough time getting housing and a bad tenant might get a mark in their record.
