Another suggestion is to try to find a couple with a dual income, based on if one looses a job at least there is another income coming in.

Like we had to bring power and water to a poultry farm, the utility company wanted to charge $xxx,xxx to bring power lines for 1500 ft to the building from the road, we told them we will do it ourselves and have submittal plans to them, they just have to give us specifications on the materials, long story short, it was half the price they asked for at a lower voltage and smaller lines.

One of the only downsides though is some Windows software won't work on them but you could have a "Dual Boot" system with Windows and Linux installed so you could choose which one to use at any given time.
