you shouldn't even be using word and excel. office in general slows down the computer. i use office libre or open office.takes a little used to since it's a different look, but for moderate use, it's amazing.i like 10. i had printer driver issue, but the internet helped me solve the problem.

You could keep it as an expansive single family home (~6500 ft^2), but the existing layout is not geared for modern living - a 20' wide grand stairway w/ 16' ceilings just isn't in demand these days.
