I had property management once tell me they couldn't do anything because the tenant hadn't given notice yet and still had some property inside when they posted pay or quit, but the power company had told me the heat had been turned off when I called to check (apparently landlord utility revert doesn't work properly if tenant just doesn't pay). 

There are also alot of podcast these days with Canadian specific content you should check out the andrew hines podcast, rise podcast and Erwin Szeto.

They also should have been doing regular checks on the home. 

One of my clients has an etrade with about 650K in securities - 350k LOC at 7.25% last I checked with him two weeks ago. 

Now, this seems like a model of retirement that’s worth spending more time on than spell check.
