A "comp" might be on the other side of a fence from a property and not as good of a comp that's two streets away.One technique:  If you use a smart phone, download the realtor.com app  Use the "search nearby" and click on "scout" at the bottom. 

@Jason White,My first impulse is to say no matter how much you have available you'll want to invest for income in retirement to ensure that your money is growing at such a rate that you drawing your living expenses from it will not deplete the principal during your expectable lifetime.You may want to read up on self-directed retirement accounts and other ways of being a private money lender.My personal thoughts on buying property with no loans is that its roughly equivalent to gambling in the Wall Street Casino.

Widening the search area does not help because the price range of the adjoining neighborhoods might be lower or higher.What I would love to be able to do would be to search an entire metro area and only receive results that are priced in the bottom 10% for the zip code, or that are priced 25% less than other homes on the street, etc.

I advise, "It I were you, I would get in the car and move it to the street before the tow truck arrives."

You never want the biggest most expensive house on the street.

The best places to be are between 7th Ave and 7th Street.
