Make it so someone who is savvy can understand why this deal is the best one for them without hiring an army of lawyers and accountants.  

You can save a TON of money from bank fees etc.Spend the money to have your lawyer review (or offer to write up) the note and mortgage.

Do I need to hire a lawyer?

Mainly because here every transaction gets lawyers on both sides.

The primary Team members are typically Attornies/Lawyers, real estate Brokers/Agents, CPA's (or accountants you trust and are knowledgable), Inspectors, Property Managers, General Contractors, and Handymen.   

The first question is when you gave the loan to your family friend, did you go through the lawyer, put a lien on the property registering yourself in the second position and etc.?
