I think college is a big waste of time and money, they don't teach anything about the real world, like writing checks, paying bills, making sure you're out of debt, how to be rich by SIMPLY just compounding, and most importantly how to worry about taxes.

Even within the stock market, there were defensive stocks in which to hide. 

Everybody’s doing this from a very defensive posture and point of view. this market is gonna rebound like you can’t believe because the people who have been selling off want to get back in it.

Time is the compounding factor in income. 5 years ago I bought a home to live in and turn into a rental and now the income is double the mortgage, income keeps increasing while costs remain relatively fixed.  

It is compounded by the home values being low (smaller depreciation) and the rents being high- and they tax on revenue not profit.
