Some radiators do not produce heat consistently, there have been steam leaks in the basement, and the previous owner clearly did not keep up with annual maintenance.

Make sure you're focusing on things that will produce the results you want. 

Ohio is looking more attractive for what I want to do.

A property that is a bit older and in need of a refresh can often be purchased for a great price, since many buyers are attracted to newer homes and communities.

The Myrtle area isn't known so much for it's schools/colleges, but they sure as hell attract a lot of vacationers and the prices there are MUCH better than here in Charleston.

I got burnt out doing it pretty quickly personally, as renting by the room tends to attract transient-types and has high turnover, although it was great in the beginning when I was living there with friends and was in my early 20's before wife and kids.
