By chance I met the owner at the building during the viewing and in a short chat managed to find out that he was a property developer, he owned 3 units in the particular building and he was selling off all his rental units to focus purely on property development, which was his core business.

If they became defensive instead, just apologize (maybe look a little confused), and say with a casual tone that the sooner you can see the inside (purely for the purposes of seeing what condition it's in and taking some photos to show your "partner," whether they actually exist or not) and you just thought it made sense to get it out of the way.

NOw those are great rentals.. you can hardly hurt them and to do a turn over cost very little.. one bathroom one kitchen.. little square box.they have zero curb appeal .. but as a pure rental.. when you look at some of the other ones i looked at bigger houses big sq footages those are going to lose money over time in the rental game.
