We haven't seen your contract and it is very conceivable that it permits you to cancel with your only liability being the loss of the $1500. 

That is why plumbing, electrical, HVAC, major construction which requires building permits, and roofing gets contracted out. 

One thing to make sure of while you are doing the fixes is that things are permitted that need to be (plumbing, electric, structural items, roof) because down the road when you sell your property disclosure may ask if items repairs were permitted.
