As long as the kid is the beneficiary of the 529 plan, and the kid buys the house and takes out the mortgage, 529 plan funds can be withdrawn to pay the mortgage, up to the college's applicable room and board allowance.If a parent buys the house and take out the mortgage, using 529 plans to pay the mortgage would not be a qualified expense.
