I would encourage you to take a trip to the market you plan to invest in and tour some houses in the neighborhoods that you are looking at. 

I would encourage you to break it down into. 1) single or multi family 2) Buy and hold vs flip --I would definitely buy and hold if you have limited knowledge when it comes to property repairs (you can always flip later).  

But we also added lease options to our model which attracted a better tenant and lessened the the amount of work that it took to manage the lease option properties.So I would encourage you consider investing in your own back yard before going out of state, especially if you live in North Carolina. 

Look into markets with steady growth and affordable prices, like Indianapolis, Kansas City, or Chattanooga.You can build your team remotely by contacting property managers, realtors, and contractors online, though meeting in person can help strengthen relationships.Focus on your strategy (buy-and-hold, BRRRR) and use platforms like BiggerPockets to learn and connect with others.
