I would get a job in real estate that you have interest or curiosity: property management, appraiser, receptionist/administrative work at a real estate broker, construction/trades.

They are both inclined to share their database of off-market deals with you since it could potentially provide them with a sale. 

But I will give you a resource where you can build your own estimate- Homewyse We have our own database of costs for our primary market, but when doing business outside our market we use Homewyse to get us in the ballpark.
