For instance on realtor.com right now there are quite a few 4br, ~3000sqft cabins with modest or no views listed in the $750k-$800k range.

Getting a 'pro's opinion and estimated costs, B 4 U Buy, may save you from a real money pit nightmare.Your other questions are best handled by your local professional contractor and preferred mortgage broker/lender.BTW. 

U would be well advised to have samples analyzed before committing to purchase this property.
