I am hoping to start by making my current house a true house hack with a basement unit - need to do the construction still - and then to start looking for more houses to start renting out for long term buy and hold strategy. 

I have a little skin in the game as an investor.

I've heard some say that holding for 2 years is the minimum to avoid capital gains, but I've also heard people say that so long as you reinvest the money within a certain period of time, you don't have to pay it.

This is my first time posting and I am in need of some advice… The background to my question is my husband and I have been dabbling part time in the real estate investment game for 10 years now, while we have been advancing in our careers and starting our family.

Might make a good hold until you die, or eventually turn it in to your retirement home type property. 

You might give up a bit but that is the game.
