Steve,We have removed three chimneys in the past year ... and there is one more on our "we could make better use of the space" list.If your gas furnace is a recent, high-efficiency model, you should be able direct exhaust it out through the wall using {C}PVC piping ... you may be able to direct vent it as well so it's not sucking warm air from the house for combustion.We demolished all three of our chimneys on our own (myself one one, along with my "handy-man" on the others).
