My experience is that if you stay in states where they are landlord friendly, squatters aren't a big concern. as an example.

I have done some Google research and articles point out concern for not being able to see the decking and determine if there are issues and fix them. 

I know some state and local governments have laws on STR and of course thats a important factor.
